Sometimes Life Sucks (and there’s no nicer way to say it!)!

Honestly, I’m so glad to be at the end of this week! It’s really been one of those weeks that I just wish I could forget; or better yet, I wish it just hadn’t happened.

It really all started 12 days ago when I found out I was pregnant, again! I found out on Monday night and I told Alex on Tuesday morning. We were both thrilled, but we were scared too given that the only other time I’ve been pregnant, I miscarried. I was feeling good this time though, it felt more “real.” I thought that meant everything would be ok. Then, just like in January, on Friday night I started spotting and cramping really bad. I had bad cramping and bleeding on and off throughout the weekend. I called my OB’s office on Monday morning and the nurse told me to stay home and keep track of my symptoms and if the pain or bleeding got too bad to go to the ER. Right before I got off the phone with her I mentioned that most of the cramping was on my right side, she stopped me right there and said to go to the ER because the pregnancy could be ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes. Usually this is caused by damaged fallopian tubes so the egg just can’t make it through. Pain on only one side can be a sign of ectopic pregnancy.

So, Alex and I headed to the ER. They did blood work and an ultrasound (for once I would like to have an ultrasound and have it be for a good reason, not confirmation that I lost my baby). Everything was “inconclusive.” It was too soon to see much on the ultrasound, though they could tell for sure that it was not ectopic. They sent me home and told me to call the OB and tell him what they had done and that they recommended getting my blood work re-done in two days (to see if my bHCG level had dropped, meaning miscarriage; doubled, meaning healthy pregnancy that just had some bleeding; or neither, meaning something else was wrong).

I went in two days later for the blood test but by then I was bleeding heavily and passing clots so I knew this was a miscarriage. The OB called two days later and confirmed my bHCG level had dropped from 33 to 10 indicating a miscarriage. I really liked the nurse that called to give me that information. I know that sounds weird but she was nice, she acted like I had just lost my baby. She said she was sorry that I had to go through this again. In the ER they don’t act like there is a baby’s life involved, they are very cold and clinical. But this nurse was the opposite of that. She gave me her name and told me to call her if anything changed or I had any questions.

Yesterday, was the first day in about eight days that I hadn’t had severe cramping (by severe I mean on the floor, face down, unable to move. I’d say like a 9 on the 1-10 scale that docs love so much). Ironically, yesterday I started having a new pain, the emotional pain of realizing that my baby is gone. Alex has had almost two weeks to process the miscarriage now, so he is starting to move on and stress out about normal things, like work again. But I’m just now realizing what all the physical pain meant. Alex and I had an argument last night because I got really upset when he came home from work and said that he doesn’t get a day off next week. His schedule had already changed once and he has to work today. Apparently, my grieving process involves becoming exceptionally clingy. All I want is Alex here, where I can see him, touch him, and watch movies with him. So last night when I got upset about the schedule change Alex tried to figure why it was upsetting me so much. I finally told him that to me the miscarriage may as well of just happened today, because when it is actually happening I’m in so much physical pain that I can’t even think about why the pain is there. Now that the physical pain is gone, I have to deal with the facts of what actually happened. This really was as much a revelation for me as it was for him. I hadn’t really thought about why I felt so lonely and sad yesterday, but when Alex asked me why I was forced to think about it and find the answer.

I also realized last night that I handle hard times much like my mom handles them. When my mom gets stressed, upset, doesn’t feel good, or something bad is happening she goes out. She goes and gets a facial, new hair-do, or a pedicure. She tries to make herself feel pretty and that relaxes her. Well, yesterday I went and got a haircut and highlights, and today I got a pedicure. I also got “dolled-up” last night because I wanted Alex to take me out when he got home, just to get a drink or something. But, Alex was late getting off work so we ended up just getting ice cream at McDonald’s.

On top of all that we are moving at the end of the month and now that Alex is having to work so much more I’m having to get ready to move on my own. Which I’m really hating! Plus, when Alex is home he so exhausted from work that he just doesn’t want to do anything, and I can’t blame him, he has been working so much.

Oh yes, another added bonus of this week is that it was finals week! So, in between going to the ER, packing, calling the doctor, being doubled over in pain, and getting blood drawn, I had five finals and Alex had two!

Here’s to a new week, that I’m praying is better than this one!

I've just got to keep hoping.

I’ve just got to keep hoping.

New Series: Wedding Wednesdays

I am excited to announce the beginning of the first official series on Coffee With Emma: Wedding Wednesdays! Every (or close to every) Wednesday I will do a post on something to do with weddings.

Some of the posts I have in the works cover topics such as bridal showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, colors, the dress, check-list for before the big day, how to dial down the stress, and the honeymoon.

Because I’m a 22-year-old fairly, newlywed I’m writing this series to 20-somethings women who are planning  (or will soon be planning) their wedding! Something that I’m excited about for this series though is that I am going to be doing some posts specifically for guys. I have been interviewing my husband Alex about many aspects of wedding planning, the honeymoon, and the bachelor party. He has been telling me things he’s glad he did, things he wished he done differently, things he wished he hadn’t done, and things he wished he had known. So ladies, pass the “For Guys” posts on to your man (or the parts of them that you want your man to know).

I want to tell you a little bit about my wedding so that you know where I’m coming from in later posts when I say something crazy.

Alex and I were engaged for a year and a half before we got married (included in that is about a 2 week period where we called off the engagement). However, we didn’t know when we were getting married until about 3 months before the wedding. Our wedding planner was my mom—she is very talented at pulling parties together, though she’s only done it for our family events. We had less than 50 people at our wedding, immediate family mainly. Alex and I each had one attendant. My maid of honor was my best friend, Lucy; and Alex’s best man was his cousin, James. We didn’t have a flower girl or ring bearer, we didn’t have ushers or a big processional of the parents and grandparents. We wanted simple and that’s what we got.

I walked down the aisle to “Storybook Love” from The Princess Bride and at the end of the ceremony “Life is a Highway” sung by Rascal Flatts is what we took our first steps as husband and wife to. We actually didn’t have dancing but I put together a playlist of songs that meant something to Alex and I to have playing in the background.

We had the wedding and reception in the same room of a banquet hall (on opposite ends of the room, since we had so few guests it worked perfect). The banquet hall had a restaurant with it so they did all the catering. The food was amazing! That was something that was very important to Alex and I, and our families. Good parties always have great food. We didn’t have a big sit down meal, we had hors d’oeuvres served buffet style. It was simple but everyone loved it.

I will incorporate more about our wedding into the upcoming Wedding Wednesday posts!

7 Tips to Stay Grounded While Planning Your Wedding

This week on Wedding Wednesdays I want to talk about what really matters when you’re planning a wedding. Wedding planning can be very stressful but if you remember what really matters in the big picture, instead of getting caught up in the wedding, I promise you the planning will go a lot smoother.

I have come up with 7 tricks to keep you grounded while planning your wedding.

  • The most important thing to remember is that your marriage is what matters in the big and little pictures, NOT the wedding. The wedding is important and a big moment in your life, it marks the beginning of your life with your man. But in the big picture a moment is what your wedding is. Your marriage is the rest of your life.  The biggest key to planning your wedding is to plan for your marriage NOT your wedding.
  • Decide what the most important elements of your wedding are to you, and fight for them. Whether it’s your dress, the food you want, or whether you want it outside or inside; if there is something you absolutely want at your wedding fight for it! At my wedding I didn’t want the big cake, I can’t really explain why but I just really didn’t want a wedding cake. I didn’t really want to do the whole cupcake thing either. What did I want? Donuts! First, I wanted a donut tower made of glazed donuts. I’ve always thought glazed donuts were boring though so I had 8-dozen assorted donuts! Some with frosting, some with sprinkles, long johns, bear claws…it was so great! I had to fight for the donuts, my mom wanted to go a more traditional route with a cake or at least cupcakes. But since I really wasn’t being too picky about other things mom let me have the donuts.

The other thing I absolutely did not want was to walk down the aisle to the Bridal March (*da da da dum, da da da dum…)! I wanted all of the music at the wedding to mean something to Alex and I; I wanted it to convey our personalities to our guests. So, I walked down the aisle to Storybook Love from “The Princess Bride.” As soon as the music started I saw everyone smile; you see, “The Princess Bride” is one of my families favorite movies to quote! There is a line from that movie for every conversation. So if there is something that you absolutely don’t want or really do want, fight for it.

  • Make sure you have someone to help you with the planning. Whether it’s a mom, stepmom, aunt, grandmother, sister, or friend you will need someone to help you! Unless you’re hiring a wedding planner of course. Whoever you choose to help you needs to be someone you can trust though. I know some people have amazing families where it really is just one big happy family; I also know there are those of you who have difficult or complicated families. I know that just because someone is technically a family member, that doesn’t automatically make him/her a great person. The person helping you with your wedding needs to be someone who you know only has your best interests at heart.
  • You also really need someone to help you have fun! Sometimes this will be your finance but what I really mean here is you need your friends. You need someone to organize fun for you. You need a sister, cousin, or friend (basically you need the maid of honor) who knows you well to, not just plan your bridal shower and bachelorette party (I will go into detail about the shower and bachelor/bachelorette parties in a future post), but to also just help you blow off some steam. Go shopping, get a pedicure, get a massage, or simply go have coffee with your bridesmaids.
  • No matter what, DO NOT put you, your fiancé, or your families into debt over your wedding. If your keep trick #1 your focus this really isn’t a big problem.
  • Keep your man in the loop. Whether your man is actively involved in the wedding planning or not, make sure you tell him what’s going on. It does involve him after all. Besides, he wants to know what’s going on. He may act like he doesn’t care or role his eyes while you start talking yet again about whether to have peach or coral bridesmaids dresses, but he does care. If it matters to you it will matter to him (it better!). Alex assured me that all of this is true so I did get a guy’s opinion.  But, don’t over focus on the wedding. Remember, your marriage is what matters big picture so don’t hyper-focus on the wedding and put your relationship on hold while you are planning your wedding!
  • Take a deep breath and remember you love your man and your man loves you and that’s why you’re getting married! Just breathe and keep your priorities straight.

Happy wedding marriage planning!

So much to do…

Congratulations, you’re getting married! I want to use this post to not go into the details of wedding planning but to give an overview of things you should get done before the wedding. Yes, one of those things is the actual planning of the wedding—which we will dive in to with more detail next week—but I want to tell you some things that I’m glad I did before the wedding and some things I wish I had done.

  • Go to the doctor.

I’m so glad I did this! Make an appointment with your gyno and get your annual physical done! Try to plan it so that it’s a couple months before the wedding (then you won’t have to worry about it for an entire year). No matter what your plans are for starting a family after marriage you can cover that at your gyno appointment. If you and your fiancé have decided to wait on children then you will want to talk about birth control at your check-up—be sure to talk about birth control (i.e. what form do you want use? etc.) with your fiancé BEFORE you go to the doctor. If you are planning on trying for kids right away then you can use your doctor appointment to make sure you are in the best health before starting your family.

It wouldn’t hurt for your man to get a check-up before the big day too. I wish Alex had done this. Alex had just started a new job when we got married and he wasn’t able to get insurance through his job for several months (it’s actually still in the process) and we couldn’t buy health insurance on our own because I have a pre-existing condition that insurance companies will not accept! Make sure you have a plan for health insurance before you get married.

It also would be wise for both you and your man to go to the dentist and eye doctor before the wedding too. I recommend you get new glasses and contacts before the wedding too. It’s just nice to have these things done so that after you get married, you can enjoy being married instead of having to make appointments and such right away.

  • Counseling.

I highly recommend pre-marital counseling. If you are having your wedding in a church chances are the church requires some form of counseling. Sometimes, the church requires the counseling be with a pastor or counselor on their staff. Some churches allow you to choose who does your counseling and you just have to provide a signed statement saying you completed the set hours of counseling. In some states if you complete a certain number of hours of counseling (where I live it’s 12 hours), when you apply for your marriage license, and give them a signed statement from your counselor or pastor, the fee for the marriage license will be much smaller.

If who does your marriage counseling is a no-brainer for you, that’s great! If who does your counseling is something you have to think about then make sure you take some time to talk and do a little research before you choose someone. You need to be able to trust your counselor. Talk to friends and family and find out who did counseling for them and if they liked the counselor.

  • Talk money!

Sit down with your man and have a serious talk about your budget (not just for the wedding, in fact, focus on post-wedding budget). First, write down you and your man’s yearly income, also write down both of your monthly incomes. Next, make a list of all of your monthly expenses (if you don’t know for sure just estimate what you think your expenses will be). That would include: cell phone, landline (do people still have those?), electricity, rent or mortgage, heating (gas), gas (for your cars), car insurance, health insurance, and groceries. If you are able to you also need to give yourself a set amount for fun things like going out to eat, movies, bowling, or whatever you and your man like to do when you go out. You should also allot a set amount each month for emergencies, hopefully you won’t have to use it often (I won’t say never use it because this is life and unfortunately you will have an emergency at some point) but you will be glad you have it when life throws something at you that you weren’t expecting. And each month you don’t use your emergency money, it’s money that you can put away and save, or use to buy something fun.

  • Clean the junk out of your trunk!

I mean literally! You should of course deal will any emotional baggage the two of you have but I’m talking about actual stuff. Clean out your closet, your shoes, your old school papers, your books, EVERYTHING! Between the shower, bachelor & bachelorette parties, and the wedding you will get so much stuff! You and your man need to do this. Decide what you are both bringing with you from your childhood and college, go through your closets and get rid of what you don’t wear or is worn out. This is the perfect time for a purge! Throw out the old and welcome the new!

  • Get healthy!

For most people this would say, “Get in Shape” but I like “healthy” better. I’m not a person who thinks you should buy your wedding dress two sizes smaller than you wear then starve yourself until the wedding. If you need to work out and lose some weight to get healthy then go for it! No matter what, DO NOT stress out about losing weight. If you are stressed you are not healthy. Your goal in getting healthy is to feel good, if you feel good you will look good.

  • Get your house in order.

By now you should know where you will be living after the wedding. Try to get your new home as organized as possible before the big day! If one of you is living in your future home now move as much of the other person’s stuff into the house that you can. By the day before the wedding you should be living out of a suitcase with what you need, everything else should be at you new home. You will have all kinds of wedding gifts and last-minute stuff people give you to put away when you get home from the honeymoon. You don’t want to have to mess with all kinds of extra stuff that you could have done earlier.

  • Get the rings!

This is a fun thing! You and your man need to go ring shopping. Make sure you allow enough time to get your rings sized (some jewelers have to send the rings out). I got my rings re-sized after the wedding and it took one month to get the rings back! So just be sure to keep that in mind.

  • Marriage license and name change.

Make sure you know the marriage license laws in your area.  Make sure you know how long the waiting period is between applying for the license and when the license becomes valid. Make sure you know how long the license is good for. You don’t want to get your marriage license 6 months before the ceremony only to find out it expired after 3 months!

If you are going to change your last name you could fill out the forms before the wedding then send them off when you get home from the honeymoon.

  • Plan the honeymoon.

Hopefully your budget allows you a honeymoon. Don’t let someone else plan this part of your pending marriage for you. This is for you and your man to have fun with. The honeymoon is also something your fiance is very interested in, even if your fiance hasn’t been very involved in the wedding planning he will have a lot to say about the honeymoon. So, the honeymoon is the perfect opportunity for you to hand the reins over to your man! Unless you are a girl who is ok with being totally surprised you should still talk to your man about where you want to go (or just tell him where you definitely do not want to go) and what you want to do (or absolutely don’t what to do).

Miso Shrimp

My Aunt and Uncle spend 6-8 weeks in Hawaii every spring (I know, it makes me hate them too, but they are retired and never had kids so they get to do that). The really great thing about their annual trips to Hawaii is that they always bring amazing presents home! When I was little, the gifts were usually clothes. But now that my Aunt knows how much I love cooking my gifts from the Pacific are food! This year one of the things my Aunt brought me is miso paste! I had tasted miso soup before but I had not even heard of miso paste!

Miso is a Japanese seasoning that is made by fermenting rice, barley, and/or soybeans with salt and a fungus called kojikin. In Japan miso is used for sauces, spreads, pickling vegetables or meats, and mixing with dashi soup stock (miso soup).

I’ve been experimenting with the miso paste lately and I think I’ve worked out all the kinks on this shrimp recipe I want to share with you.

Miso Shrimp:

  • 2 12 ounce bags frozen shrimp (this is what I used, you can of course use fresh shrimp)
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter
  • 2 Tbsp miso paste (I used dark soybean miso paste)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • juice from ½ lemon
  • 2 tsp brown sugar

Combine melted butter, miso paste, soy sauce, ginger, lemon juice, and brown sugar.

Add shrimp to miso mixture and coat evenly.

Cover bowl and let marinade for 1 hour in fridge.

Place shrimp on baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes (just until shrimp are cooked) at 350 degrees.

Serve with rice.

Eat well! 🙂

Finally Motivated!

I have finally figured out what I needed to motivate me to get to the gym and get in shape! The prospect of pregnancy! Alex and I are really hoping to start a family this year. I need to lose about 50 pounds to be at a healthy BMI for my height. I’ve been eating healthier (I was thinking about what I eat earlier and I eat a lot of vegetables). I’m not good at going to the gym though. Lately though, I’ve been motivated to get to the gym.

images-3

After I had a miscarriage in January I could not even think of getting pregnant again. It’s been 2 months since we lost our baby, it has seemed like much longer than 2 months and it’s been a hard journey. But through it I’ve gotten stronger and when Alex and I do get pregnant next time, I want to be in the best shape I can be and give my baby the best chance!

So, I’m very motivated. I’m reading up on healthy pregnancy lifestyles like crazy! I really enjoy this blog: http://walkingwithdancers.blogspot.com/p/healthy-pregnancy.html The author is easy to relate to, she’s young (30) and married with two daughters. She had two very different pregnancies and births and she gives a lot of practical advice. She went into her first pregnancy in not the best shape and didn’t really stick to a diet during the pregnancy. The second time around she went into the pregnancy at a healthier weight and stuck to a healthy diet throughout. The differences between the pregnancies are amazing.

Anyway, back to me being motivated! Since I’ve started taking eating healthy and working out seriously I feel so good! I’m still terrible at getting a good night’s sleep but my clothes are fitting better 😉

Must Move: Decorating Mania!

I think I have spring fever! I just want it to be warm outside and classes to be done! The spring fever, and the fact that we have lived in this apartment for close to a year now (as a person who moved roughly every 2 years for the first 18 years of my life I hate staying in one place too long! Even if we are just moving a few blocks away, I need that!), I’m antsy for our move in June! We are only moving about 10 minutes away from where we currently are but I’m so excited! We currently live in an efficiency apartment. For any of you that don’t know, “efficiency” means: VERY SMALL! I know our apartment isn’t as small as some efficiency apartments but still, it really was meant to just have one person living here. Currently we have a bedroom/living room (its more bedroom than living room because we can’t fit a couch or anything in with the bed), we also have a very small kitchen. The stove/oven and refrigerator are both “apartment sized,” as someone who loves to cook I’m not a fan of the small appliances. I also don’t like that there is really no counter space. Gosh, I’m really complaining a lot! Ok, I’ll say something nice, we do have our own bathroom that we don’t have to share or anything! However, the bathroom is super tiny! It has a shower but the shower is really small (and since it’s just a shower I’ve gone a year without bubble baths 😦 .

Anyway, back to the need to move! I have been addicted to the home decor page on Pintrest lately! I have so many ideas of things I want to do with the new apartment that I don’t know if my brain can take one more idea! It’s not just the home decor page either, it’s the DIY home decor! I’ve never been a creative person, in fact, most of the time I’m the opposite of creative! But because money doesn’t grow on trees (I so wish it did!) I’ve been looking for inexpensive ways to make our apartment feel more like a home. I think the thing I hate the most about an apartment (maybe this isn’t true for all apartments, but so far it is for me) is that we can’t paint! I love color, but with me not being creative the first thing I think to change is the wall color. Our current apartment has paneling EVERYWHERE! So it would’ve been nice to paint over that. If I remember correctly our new apartment is all a neutral tan color (we looked at the apartment a couple of months ago).

Back to painting, to me painting the walls is safe. Since there will be no painting of the walls I have been forced to go outside my comfort zone. I have a bookshelf and a desk that are both black that I’m thinking of painting. I’ve never painted furniture though and I’m kinda scared of it! My parents recently got a new dining room table so they are going to give us their old one. Alex and I will need to get new chairs for it though because the ones that come with it have been beaten down by 5 kids and are falling apart (literally). I think I want to stain the table a dark wash then find some nice cheap chairs at the thrift store to paint. I think I want the table to be dark then paint the chairs a light color. What do you  think? Will that look ok? I hope it will!

So if anyone has any advice on cheap decorating or painting furniture leave a comment! I definitely need the help! 🙂

Lucy: The Healing Begins

Alex and I having been dreaming babies lately! We really want to start a family. Which is a big thing for us, especially me, because it’s been 9 weeks since I had a miscarriage. It has been the longest 9 weeks of my life!

After the miscarriage I could not even think of getting pregnant again. Like I said, it’s been 2 months since we lost our baby and it has seemed like so much longer than 2 months. I will never forget my first baby (I know I was only 6 weeks pregnant but that was my baby)! In a previous post I said I’m quite certain that the baby was a girl. Shortly after the miscarriage I heard a song by Skillet called “Lucy” and since then I’ve called my sweet baby Lucy. The song was written about a young couple who regretted a past abortion. But really the song is about loss and regret. The song really put words to what I was feeling.

I would like to share the lyrics with you:

“Lucy”

Hey Lucy, I remember your name
I left a dozen roses on your grave today
I’m in the grass on my knees, wipe the leaves away
I just came to talk for a while
I got some things I need to say

[Chorus:]

Now that it’s over
I just wanna hold her
I’d give up all the world to see
That little piece of heaven looking back at me
Now that it’s over
I just wanna hold her
I’ve gotta live with the choices I made
And I can’t live with myself today

Hey Lucy, I remembered your birthday

They said it’d bring some closure to say your name

I know I’d do it all different if I had the chance

But all I got are these roses to give

And they can’t help me make amends

[Chorus]

Here we are, now you’re in my arms

I never wanted anything so bad

Here we are, for a brand new start

Living the life that we could’ve had
Me and Lucy walking hand in hand

Me and Lucy never wanna end

Just another moment in your eyes

I’ll see you in another life

In heaven where we never say goodbye

Here we are, now you’re in my arms

Here we are for a brand new start

Got to live with the choices I’ve made

And I can’t live with myself today

Me and Lucy walking hand in hand

Me and Lucy never wanna end

Got to live with the choices I’ve made

And I can’t live with myself today

Hey Lucy, I remember your name

By John Cooper of Skillet

Here’s a link to a video of the song as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8UB3VMN20Q

This is such a therapeutic post for me. I hope it can help someone else out there in some way.

Cheesy Tomato Tortellini

I found a great new soup recipe, on Pintrest of course, and of course I altered it! I thought I would share the recipe I used with ya all!

IMG_0406

Ingredients:

  • 2 cloves of garlic (or garlic powder)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cans condensed tomato soup
  • 2 cans diced tomato (I used diced tomatoes in olive oil with onion and garlic)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1 can chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1 package frozen cheese filled tortellini

Saute garlic and onion in olive oil over medium heat until golden brown.

Meanwhile, cook the tortellini according to the directions on the package.

Add tomato soup, diced tomatoes, milk, cottage cheese, chicken broth, and seasonings.

Bring soup to a simmer.

Add tortellini and let simmer for 10 minutes. (technically the soup is done but if you have time, it’s even better after it cooks for a while or even the next day!)

Enjoy!
